A delicious, crispy fakeaway that’s better than the original! This homemade orange chicken is sticky, sweet, and full of flavour — the ultimate comfort dinner you can make at home in under an hour.
🛒 Ingredients
For the batter:
- 1 tsp garlic granules
- 1 tsp onion granules
- 1 tbsp baking powder
- 150g plain flour
- 100g cornflour
- Salt and pepper
- 1.5 cups water
- 1 egg
- 2 large chicken breasts
For the orange sauce:
- 1 cup orange juice
- 1/4 cup soy sauce
- 1/4 cup white rice vinegar
- 2 tbsp water
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 2 tbsp caster sugar
- 2 tbsp cornflour
For frying & seasoning:
- Vegetable oil
- 1 tbsp grated garlic
- 1 tbsp grated ginger
- 1 tsp chilli
- Drizzle of sesame oil
- Spring onions, to garnish
👩🍳 Method
- Make the batter:
In a large bowl, whisk together all batter ingredients until smooth. Add chopped chicken breast and coat well. - Mix the sauce:
In a jug or bowl, stir together all orange sauce ingredients until smooth and lump-free. Set aside. - Cook the chicken:
Heat vegetable oil to 200°C in a deep pan. Fry the battered chicken pieces in batches for 4 minutes, turning until golden. Let rest for 10 minutes, then fry again for extra crunch. - Prepare the sauce:
In a clean pan, fry garlic, ginger, and chilli in a little oil. Pour in the orange sauce and stir until thick and glossy. Finish with a drizzle of sesame oil. - Combine & serve:
Toss the crispy chicken into the sauce until coated. Serve over fluffy rice and top with fresh spring onions.
💡 Tips & Notes
- For extra spice, add a pinch of chilli flakes to the sauce.
- Great for batch cooking — the sauce can be made ahead and stored in the fridge.
